With the qualifying round for next year's Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, only four months away, Major League Baseball is starting to get ready.

MLB has formed a nine-member Steering Committee to work in conjunction with USA Baseball to select the manager, coaches and the 24 professional players who will represent Team USA in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games Baseball Qualifying Event scheduled for Panama City, Panama, on Nov. 1-11, 2003, it was announced on Thursday.

The committee is headed by Co-Chairmen Dean Taylor and Bob Watson, who will appoint the manager and coaching staff and will oversee a Selection Committee that will choose the players.

Team USA won the gold medal at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia, but must qualify for the 2004 games by finishing first or second out of 12 competing countries at the 2003 Qualifying Event in Panama City.

The nine members of the Steering Committee are: Bill Bavasi (Co-Chair of the 2000 Steering and Selection Committees); Billy Beane of the Oakland Athletics; Dave Dombrowski of the Detroit Tigers; Omar Minaya of the Montreal Expos; J.P. Ricciardi of the Toronto Blue Jays; Terry Ryan of the Minnesota Twins; Kevin Towers of the San Diego Padres; Kenny Williams of the Chicago White Sox, and Tony Bernazard of the MLB Players Association.
